"It Is Well with My Soul" has comforted believers for almost 150 years, but it was born of unspeakable loss. Horatio Spafford was a Presbyterian elder in Chicago. His wife and their four daughters were traveling from the United States to England on the SS Ville du Havre in 1873 when another vessel struck their ship, causing it to sink. Spafford's wife, Anna, survived, but their daughters all drowned.

 

Upon learning of the tragedy, Spafford immediately traveled to England to reunite with Anna. As his ship passed the location where his daughters died, he penned the unforgettable words: "When peace like a river attendeth my way; when sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, ‘It is well, it is well with my soul.’"

 

This hymn reminds us that nothingno loss, no affliction, no calamitycan separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:35). Our sin has been nailed to the cross and we bear it no more. Soon, the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend. The certain hope of that day allows us to say "it is well," even today.
