Tearfund Latest Prayer Points

Dear Friend,

We pray because we have faith that God answers our prayers and that he is mighty to act. We pray because it makes a difference.

Thank you for joining us in prayer.

This week, we’re praying about situations where peace is needed. In Chad, we’re praying for the continued success of peacebuilding work through our partners that is making a real difference in communities there, and in Ukraine and Afghanistan, where many people are suffering great loss and hardship, we’re praying that God will bring peace into desperate situations.

Answer to prayer in Ethiopia

We often ask you to pray for peace in conflict (including every day for a whole month last December!) and you may recall praying about Tigray, in northern Ethiopia.

We wanted to share an encouraging answer to prayer with you.

After two years of war, in November a peace agreement was signed between the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan leaders. Then, in February, the Ethiopian prime minister and Tigrayan leaders met in person to look at how the peace process was going and to discuss further agreements to ease the lives of people living in Tigray.

Tigray has, for a long time, faced dire shortages of food, fuel, cash and medicines. Now, basic services, such as communications, banking and electricity, are gradually being restored to the region and some aid deliveries have been resumed (although on a small scale). Commercial flights between Addis Ababa and Tigray’s capital Mekelle have also been restarted.

Praise God for an end to this conflict and please pray for continued improvements in the situation.

Take a moment to praise our God who answers prayers

Today we’ll be using the words of Psalm 8:

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honour.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Pray for the world

Ukraine dam breach causes vast destruction

A major dam breach in southern Ukraine (Kherson) has caused massive flooding in at least 29 communities and thousands of people have been evacuated. There are now also fears about potentially dislodged landmines. Pray for access to clean water and shelter for those who have been displaced. Ask for safety for our local church partners and access to resources so they can support those in need. Read more here.

Extreme poverty in Afghanistan

Lift up the people of Afghanistan. Ask God that, in spite of an increasingly volatile political and humanitarian environment, those who are vulnerable to hunger and the cold as a result of extreme poverty will be able to provide for themselves and their families. Pray that people from all walks of life will have the opportunity to lead a dignified life and that Tearfund is able to continue successfully working towards this goal.

Church and Community Mobilisation (CCM) in Chad

CCM in Chad has helped to bring about the strengthening of family ties and good collaboration in settling disputes. This process is vital to building and maintaining peace and to re-establishing good working relationships within society. Pray that the Lord will preserve this culture of peace in the hearts of all the inhabitants of Makeuré, where Tearfund has been working through local church partners, and in the country at large.

Prayer Diary: urgent prayer for Ethiopia

Each week, Tearfund's Prayer Diary will focus on a specific topic or country to help guide your prayers for global issues and people living in poverty.

Sunday 11 June - Saturday 17 June

The aftermath of an extended drought continues to affect more than 24 million people in Ethiopia, and it is estimated that over 10 million will need food assistance this year. Failed harvests and droughts have been particularly severe in the south of the country, causing loss of crops and the death of livestock. When rain did finally arrive recently, it caused flooding. (You can read more here.) Tearfund is responding with partners in a severely-affected community in Borena in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. This week, pray that they will make it through this protracted crisis.
