Tearfund Latest Prayer Points

Dear Friend,

After another week of fires in Europe and floods and a typhoon in Asia, your prayers today are once again needed for the people who are being most heavily impacted by the climate crisis and being pushed further into poverty – leaving them more vulnerable to all kinds of risk.

The monsoon season continues to bring more flooding in Pakistan. We’ve updated the information we shared with you previously (read it here) and this week’s Prayer Diary is dedicated to the situation there.

We’re also asking you to pray for people in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Doksuri and for the ongoing cycle of drought and flood that is affecting countries in the Sahel region of Africa.

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

This Sunday, 30 July, is the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons and we’re asking you to pray for survivors of trafficking and for our partner in Nepal who is working to support those who have become victims. There’s also a story for you to read about one survivor’s journey to hope through the support they received.

Pray with us

With all of these things going on, we’d love to start by taking a moment in silence to allow God to speak to us and remind us of who he is, how powerful he is, and how much he loves each of us and his wondrous creation.

Perhaps you might like to try the in-out breath prayer ‘Yah-weh’ while you do so? As you breathe in, the sound made is like the sound ‘Yah’ and as you exhale, it is similar to the sound ‘weh’. Yahweh is the Hebrew name for God in the Bible and as we breathe his name, it is a soothing reminder that everything that has breath does so because he created it.

Let us start in that place of perspective and, as the psalmist says in Psalm 150:6, ‘Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.’

Protecting people from trafficking in Nepal

Thank God for our local partner in Nepal who has been working with survivors of trafficking and gender-based violence. Many survivors have engaged in art therapy and are now able to use the skills they have learnt to generate an income. Our partner has also worked closely with the local government. Pray for continued building of relationships in the community. Ask for safety, protection and restoration for the survivors.

Learn more about the problem of trafficking and one survivor’s story of learning to hope again through support from Tearfund’s local partner.

2

Recovery after Typhoon Doksuri

Typhoon Doksuri made landfall in the Philippines on Wednesday with wind speeds of 140 mph, cutting power, felling trees and dumping at least 40cm of rain. Over 12,000 people were evacuated. Our partner PHILRADS is in coordination with their field teams and local churches to look at ways to respond where necessary. Please pray for the safety of all those affected and for access to resources to support those impacted by the typhoon.

3

Rising temperatures in Sahel

Temperatures in the Sahel region of Africa are rising 1.5 times faster than the global average. Rainfall is more erratic and, when it does come, it is more intense – causing floods that reduce crop yields and contaminate scarce water supplies. Pray for countries in this region and ask for God's help for the most climate-affected countries.

Each week, Tearfund's Prayer Diary will focus on a specific topic or country to help guide your prayers for global issues and people living in poverty.

Sunday 30 July - Saturday 5 August

Pakistan’s people are still suffering from the effects of the disastrous flooding in August 2022 and this year’s monsoon season has already brought more flooding and loss in the country. UN officials have warned that more than 10 million people, including children, living in flood-affected areas still do not have access to safe drinking water. The prolonged lack of safe drinking water will increase the risk of widespread waterborne diseases. Pray this week for protection from disease and for people to have the resources to rebuild their lives.
