Tearfund Latest Prayer Points

Thank you for your prayers last week for Cyclone Mocha. Praise God that the storm did not directly hit Cox's Bazar as it had been on track to do. More than a million people live in makeshift shelters there in the world’s largest refugee camp.

The storm did cause widespread damage to buildings, homes and infrastructure, and we ask you to continue to pray for all those who have been affected, but we thank God for improved, effective disaster preparedness ahead of the cyclone’s landfall – which undoubtedly helped save lives as around 750,000 people were able to move to storm shelters in time.

Our local partners in Bangladesh and Myanmar were involved in those efforts to help people be prepared ahead of Cyclone Mocha. In our prayers this week, we are also giving thanks for disaster risk financing that will help protect people in the Philippines – another region where we work which is extremely vulnerable to tropical cyclones.

Pray with us

In Mark 4:35–41, it tells us the story of Jesus calming a storm that had the disciples fearing for their lives. It says: ‘He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.’

Take a moment with us this week to meditate on that scripture as we come to God with our prayers. He is constant. He is the same today as he always has been. He still has power to calm every kind of storm. Praise be to God.

Disaster risk financing in the Philippines

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Thank God that Tearfund (as part of a consortium) has been approved to join a disaster risk financing pilot supported by Start Network. This project will develop contingency plans for tropical cyclones in northern Philippines. Pray for clear outcomes and opportunities as we work with churches, community institutions and the local government.

People displaced in Chad

Almost 500,000 refugees in Chad urgently need water, sanitation and hygiene assistance. The country is heavily affected by climate change, and access to water is crucial to preventing tension between communities that can lead to deadly conflict. Pray for people’s basic needs to be met and for the 30,000 people who are reported to have crossed into Chad as they have fled the military clashes in Sudan to find a safe place.

Pray for peace in Haiti

Pray for the security of our local partners and staff and for their families as they work in risky areas, or have to cross risky areas to reach their place of work. It has been reported that security conditions in Haiti have been worsening and that violence and protest movements have increased over the last weeks – both in the countryside and in the capital city.

Each week, Tearfund's Prayer Diary will focus on a specific topic or country to help guide your prayers for global issues and people living in poverty

Sunday 21 May - Saturday 27 May

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, with just over half its population – mostly people in rural areas – living in poverty. This week, give thanks and pray for local churches across the country that are taking steps to transform the lives of people in amazing ways.
