20Schemes Music: Who Are We?
(from www.20schemesequip.com)
Who Are We? I wrote this song to spell out a few wonderful truths about who we are as Christians. In the modern, Western world, people are obsessed with their identity. How one ‘identifies oneself’ is everything (even if it’s vague and subjective). My hope is that this song will serve believers by reminding us of our true identity in Christ. In Him, we stand before the eternal and holy God, not as condemned sinners, but justified children, righteous in His sight. This glorious truth transforms who we are individually as Christians and also forms us as the people of God, gathered together in local churches around the world.
From Condemned to Justified
We are all damaged by our past. We’re sinners who are prone to fall, and our lives on earth are but a fleeting breath. As we grow and mature in the Christian life, we realise we are weaker than we thought we were and we become more aware of our dependence on God. We were once condemned by our sin, but now, through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ—who paid in full the penalty for our sin—we are forgiven, justified, and righteous in the sight of God.
True contentment in this mad and confused world can only be found when we turn, not inward to some self-made identity, but to Christ, who alone can free us from our sin and enable us to submit to God in joyful worship.
Now we sing! united in the fight
Justified by faith and righteous in God’s sight
Let this local church display this truth for all to see
That we were once condemned
but now in Jesus Christ we’re free.
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” (Rom. 5:1–11)
