What if there was a solution to extreme poverty? We believe there is: the church.

Over the past 50 years, we’ve seen how local churches can bring effective and lasting transformation to whole communities. And, from our earliest days, we’ve been challenging the church in the UK to play its part in God’s restoration plan and support people living in poverty to fulfil their God-given potential.

We recently launched a bold campaign called Practise What You Pray to encourage more Christians across the UK to take action to end extreme poverty and injustice. You may have seen our TV advert if not, why not watch it now at the link we've included below? We’d love you to share it with your family and friends too.

Churches are often best placed to respond to disasters, they understand the needs and strengths of their communities and are able to reach some of the most vulnerable groups. And they can continue to support their communities for years to come. Find out more about the powerful impact of the local church in this month’s article.

If you’re as fired up about the local church as we are, we’d love you to join Team Tearfund at Kiltwalk 2023. Scroll down to find out how you can help spread the vision.

With every blessing,

Why we love the church (and how it's the answer to poverty)

From its unique position right within the community, the local church knows the needs of the people it serves. And in many places where Tearfund works, the church has a significant and trusted influence, giving it a voice for change and justice in society. The church can work powerfully and effectively to bring lasting transformation. In fact, a recent independent study for Tearfund found that an incredible £28 of social value can be created for every £1 invested in the church and the community.

This video is part of Tearfund’s new campaign, Practise What You Pray, encouraging Christians across the UK to take action to end extreme poverty and injustice. Please share this video to help us reach more people and spread the message of a biblical and whole-life response to poverty that will last for generations to come.
