Sanctuary Foundation: World Refugee Week
Dear Friends
It’s been a very exciting World Refugee Week. Thank you to all of you who got involved.
We had a brilliant time at our first ever Great Big Live Assembly. On the day, over 600 schools joined us as we linked up with a refugee camp in Jordan.
My co-host for the event was Daniel, a 9-year-old refugee from Ukraine. He was much loved by the pupils with some children recommending he get his own TV Show! Around 300,000 pupils were reached by this event and many reported feeling inspired and moved by the opportunity to understand life from the perspective of refugee children. Here are some of the lovely comments we received:
- It really opened the students' eyes to what's going on in the world around them and we had some great discussions as a result of taking part in the assembly.
- It developed empathy and understanding in our students.
- We have since had lots of discussion about the importance of home, belonging and safety. Pupils have had their eyes opened to situations in the wider world and developed a passion for aspects of social justice and humanitarian relief support.
- The class were really reflective after watching the video and it reminded them how lucky we all are!
- Without being asked lots of students chose to use refugees and the ideas of war in their creative writing projects in year 8.
We would love to do more of these events and would love your support to do so. Would you consider setting up a one-off gift or a monthly donation to help us spread a vision for supporting refugees to all generations? To give, please go to: https://www.stewardship.org.uk/partners/sanctuaryfoundation
On Tuesday evening we were delighted to host a unique literary festival. The No Place Like Home event brought together eight refugee authors including Suad Al Darra, Hamed Amiri and Gulwalli Passarlay. We were delighted to be joined by 'West End Has Faith' - an incredible group who sang powerful songs of home, and also by Mel Geidroyc who did a fabulous poetry reading.
