Churches Urged To Support Syria Appeal
(from www.lifeandwork.org)
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has urged churches to support a new appeal supporting the people of Syria as they recover from last month’s earthquake.
The ‘Standing Firm – Rebuilding Lives in Syria’ appeal, launched today by the Church’s Faith Impact Forum, is raising money for the Church’s partner church, the National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon (NESSL).
The NESSL, which provided emergency shelter and aid for victims in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, is asking for help providing appropriate housing for families who are still sleeping in church halls and schools.
In a letter to Session Clerks sent today, the Moderator, the Rt Rev Iain Greenshields, writes: “It is now nearly two months since the devastating earthquake hit Turkey and Syria. The Emergency Teams have all left the area, the News Reporters have moved on to other stories, and many people have forgotten the terrible sights we witnessed only a few weeks ago.
“Our Partner Church in the area has been valiantly supporting people in their communities. They see the effects of the earthquake which are still raw and painful to so many people. As the Church of Scotland, we know that when one part of Christ’s body is suffering, we are all suffering, and we need to reach out and help our fellow sisters and brothers at this time.”
You can donate to the appeal by bank transfer to the following account, using the reference Syria Appeal. All donations will be forwarded to NESSL.
