Malaria Still The Biggest Killer In Low Income Countries
Did you know that more than 600,000 people die globally from malaria every year according to the World Health Organisation?
Over 75% of these are children under 5.
One of them is Destin, a miracle baby from a remote village in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Destin was born naturally in 2017, joined at the navel to her sister Anick.
Their medevac flight from Vanga to Kinshasa saved a 300-mile overland journey to hospital. To this day, medics cannot fathom how the conjoined twins survived their separation surgery.

Last year, Dr Mudji from Vanga Hospital helped MAF find the twins to see how they were doing five years on.
But the news was tragic: both girls contracted malaria, and Destin passed away in her mother arms.

Since hearing Destin’s story, MAF has joined with partners and colleagues worldwide to gather more malaria stories to shine a light on this preventable disease and how MAF is fighting it by air.
