Tearfund Lent Devotional Day 36
No problem too big?
“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.” (1 Samuel 17:45, NIV)
David knew his best battle strategy was God’s strength and power. There’s no way David should have won against Goliath! Yet, the Bible reminds us, ‘If God is for us, who can be against us?’ (Romans 8:31).
Our God is mightier than the battles that we face. The cross took victory over death and sin! Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and ask the Holy Spirit to help your church endure (Hebrews 12:1-2).
Even though Saul tried to give David his armour, helmet and sword, David chose his old weapons that had remained faithful – his staff, slingshot and stones. Let’s choose to fight with the faithful tools of a disciple – the power of the word of God, prayer and our church community.
‘In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.’ (John 16:33). Past tense. Jesus has already overcome!
God, open our eyes as you did with Elisha’s servant to reveal how heaven’s armies are protecting your people. Thank you for actively bringing justice, declaring peace over crises and restoration over brokenness. Ignite our faith, again, for your power to equip us and for your global church to see the world restored. Amen.
