Tearfund Lent Devotional Day 26
Anxious for the world
‘For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen...’ (Romans 1:20, NIV)
Anxious for the world on a spring morning
There is pink in the sky, the blackbirds
are singing; and the plants are throwing forth
new green. Understand this: the ripening buds
on magnolia and camellia are not mere hints.
Yes the planes are bellowing overhead;
yes the boney rope of terror is tightening
around the world; yes my soul is battered and weary
and I am hardly without blame.
Yet the trees are silhouetted
against quite the shade of blue;
the wrens and the robins are presenting the case
for life; and fear is not alone in my blood
(coffee and the word are waking me up) –
under the pink streaks in the sky
I am deciding to go on.
