Tearfund Lent Devotional Day 22
Who is responsible?
‘They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth…’ (Genesis 1:26, NLT)
‘You may choose to look the other way but you can never say again that you did not know.’ William Wilberforce
A couple of years ago, a group of Tearfund staff sat in the crypt of a church in London, painting letters on sheets to make a banner of this quote. Our eyes had been opened to the disasters unfolding because of climate change.
Since then, more eyes have been opened. This last year has brought the climate crisis into stark focus with droughts, heatwaves, floods and failed harvests.
Humanity’s calling from the beginning has been to ‘reign’ over creation. But before we get ideas above our station, we should remember that we are to reign God’s way – as servants. We are to serve and care for the fish, birds, plants… all our global neighbours! How do we follow this calling? We choose to not look away. We take action personally and we challenge those with power to do the right thing.
Forgive us Jesus when we are tempted to look the other way. Help us to follow your example, and be servant leaders. Amen.
