Church of Scotland Guild Weekly E-News
Saving God’s Wonderful Creation
Genesis, the first book of the Bible, teaches us how God created the universe, giving it light and darkness, the sky, sun, moon and stars, the seas, the creatures that live in them, the lands that are inhabited by humans and animals, and where the plants and trees flourish. A wonderful Creation for all to enjoy!

Since evolution, mankind has been the steward of this magnificent Creation; maintaining and preserving the richness and diversity of life but, sadly, our world has been seriously abused, and is now in serious jeopardy and there is a crisis in nature. Perhaps this is not too evident in our beautiful corner of the world, where we still enjoy the various stages of the seasons throughout the year.

From spring (the season of rebirth, rejuvenation and regrowth of plants and trees; animals emerging from hibernation and the lengthening of days), through to the warmth of the summer months, and then on to autumn when we witness mother nature’s colourful display as the leaves on the trees change colour, days shorten and the transition to winter begins. Then, after the dark cold days of winter, the cycle begins all over again. We are fortunate that we can enjoy the beauty of our wonderful countryside and enjoy clean fresh air and water.

Unfortunately, in many other parts of the world, we witness extremes of weather wreaking havoc, causing unprecedented wildfires and devastating flooding across the continents, creating untold misery and heartache for millions of people.

A recent notable report to the United Nations warned that the world is facing a climate emergency and these issues need to be addressed as a matter of urgency. As I write, delegates from around the world have gathered to attend the COP26 summit in Glasgow to address the issues of climate change and, as Christians, we welcome the dialogue and pray that delegates from across the globe may reach an agreement on measures to take for prevention, and hopefully reversal, of man-made climate change.

The world around us is in a fragile state and, as Christians, we need to understand that Creation care is an issue that affects all of us and that everything we do impacts upon one another. We would urge everyone to join in. As very small cogs in a very large wheel, what can we do to help out? As the old Scots saying goes: "mony a mickle makes a muckle!" Every little helps.

Prayer points from 24/7 Prayer

* United decision-making and clear communication between country negotiators.
* Boldness for leaders: that they will be ambitious in making decisions that will secure a safer world for us all.
* Wisdom and guidance for heads of state and government ministers, as they bring their nations’ priorities to the table, and that the voices of those most affected by climate change will be amplified and brought to their attention.

Prayer activity from 24/7 Prayer
Dig out three coins from your pocket, bag or wherever you keep your loose change.

* Take your first coin and turn it in your palm as you pray for graceful communication, peaceful discussion and fruitful conversation between negotiators.
* Take your second coin and pray for Holy Spirit wisdom and God-led guidance for our world leaders.
* Take your third coin and pray for the fair and careful stewardship of money by financial brokers.

Double celebration at New Monkland
Members of New Monkland Guild in Glenmavis enjoyed a double celebration last week when they had their 90th birthday and also presented long service certificates to three of their members. Isabel Bannister has over 50 years' service and is their longest-serving member. Mary Hunter also has over 50 years' membership, and Annette Oliphant has over 25 years'. They were joined in their celebrations by General Secretary Iain Whyte, and former National Convener Mary Ford and her husband Rev Alan Ford. Alan was their minister for many years and Mary is a very active member of the Guild. It was a wonderful evening of celebration.

Monday memory
Our Monday memory takes us to Malawi and the graves of Scottish missionaries. It is always a very moving part of any visit to be able to pay your respects to those who went from Scotland to share the love of Jesus with people overseas and who did not return to Scotland.

Walk with me oh my Lord
Our hymn this week is maybe not well known by many of you, but it is a very uplifting hymn that reminds us that no matter what, Jesus is walking with us, even through the darkest night or brightest day. We hope you find it a source of encouragement.

Tuesday: remembering our former project partners in Bolivia who are helping to tackle the impact of climate change by providing solar ovens.
Wednesday: thinking especially of people in communities across Scotland who have been flooded out of their homes. Asking that they will soon be able to return home.
Thursday: giving thanks for our former project partner, Malawi Fruits, who are helping to overcome issues of climate change by providing solar pumps to farmers in Malawi.
Friday: remembering our current project partners and giving thanks for the way in which they engage with Guilds across Scotland.
Saturday: for all who are taking part in the march for climate justice in Glasgow today.
Sunday: giving thanks for the work of CrossReach and asking that God will bless all with whom they engage in the weeks ahead.
