Bible Society: Reasons To Believe In The Power Of The Bible
‘I was a vet and a managing partner in a big practice on the edge of the New Forest. I’d done everything from horses to cows, but ended up being a skin specialist for cats and dogs.
‘I’m a bit driven, so there came a time when I was one of the partners, we had three young children under five, and I was church warden. God said to me, “You don’t have to run around like this. Just do one thing.”
‘It was a bit of a shock to the system, because being a vicar wasn’t part of how I saw myself. I just had plans to be a vet. God was very gracious, but it wasn’t until I read John 15.16 that the way I saw it changed. It says, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit – fruit that will last – and so that whatever you ask in my name, the Father will give you.”
‘It put everything into perspective. If I stayed a vet, what would that be like compared with saving people’s souls and giving them eternal life? It doesn’t compare really.
‘I used to love doing surgical things. I still like fixing things, but I’m fixing people now, which is a bit more long-term and more frustrating. You don’t see the results so quickly, but I wouldn’t swap it at all.’
