"If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD"

1 Corinthians 1:31 NLT

One of the difficult times for my dad, now long since dead, was when I left Oxford and joined Youth for Christ. Until then he had confidently boasted of my achievements to his friends and negotiated a graduate position for me at a city accountancy firm. Then I went all religious on him. He didn’t understand my new-found faith and was unable to celebrate my career choice. He didn’t know what to tell his colleagues about what I was doing. It led to a long period of strained relationship between the two of us.

We all enjoy talking up our own or a loved one’s achievements. To some degree our standing is enhanced through being in close proximity to someone else’s success. Perhaps it is a success we yearned for yet haven’t realised. Certainly for my dad, one son at Oxford and another at Cambridge gave him much to boast about.

All my educational experience encouraged me to invest heavily in self-confidence, informed me that what I didn’t know could never obstruct my pursuit of my career choice, and that I was in fact the centre of my own universe. As such, learning to yield to God was often difficult. I thought I could talk my way out of sin, and build a credible argument for my own wilfulness. I later fell in love with my own quality of Christian service and ministry and assumed on the basis of what I did, God was proud of me.

Of course, such self-righteousness blinded me to the reality that all the good work I imagined I was doing was no more than detritus in God’s sight. It was only as I learned to take my eyes off myself, off my career, and off developing my public persona that I came to see that I could not gaze on God and polish my ego at the same time.

Are you anxious about your standing in the eyes of others? Is your self-worth too invested in your achievements?

Lord, whatever I have achieved or not, may my one boast be how great a God you are.
