Mourning into dancing

Something to read

You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.

- Psalm 30:11-12 .

Something to think about

These verses bring the contrast between the state of ‘mourning’ and ‘dancing’ into a sharp focus. To move from one to the other affects the soul in no uncertain terms. Both conditions are at worst and at best overwhelming.

David resounds the truth we know and celebrate; the Lord in his grace and mercy is able to turn our mourning into dancing!

We are invited not only to live our lives with this expectation; we are invited to play a part in making this true for others. The thing is, we can’t truly dance with authenticity in the company of mourners.

Scripture declares in more ways than one that it is God’s desire that we are joyful, worshipful and thankful. This state of being is so pertinent to our wellbeing and scope to flourish that God will miraculously turn our mourning into dancing.

Each one of us is invited to play a part in this mission.

Something to do

How do we ensure that we are joyful, worshipful and thankful? What opportunities do you have to encourage and help others to be joyful, worshipful and thankful?

  • Start with yourself – list 5-10 points of reference for thanksgiving before you go to sleep – repeat as regularly as you can – every night would not be a bad idea!
  • Reflect on your inner circle – family, friends, church group, for example – what and how could you contribute to their lives to improve their wellbeing and help them flourish?
  • Consider opportunities to play a greater role in mission within the wider community in partnership or under the auspices of your local church or Christian Aid.

Something to pray

Jubilant God,
may I ever be reminded
that it is blessed
to be a blessing.
Help me to demonstrate the joy,
the heart full of praise and thankfulness
that is due to you
and inspire others to draw near to you.
