Bible Society: Reasons To Believe In The Power Of The Bible
‘I was homeless, living in a shop doorway in London Bridge. My life was turmoil. I was homeless because I was addicted to drugs and had been shunned by my family, who were Jehovah’s Witnesses.
‘I knew who God was, obviously, having been brought up a JW. I knew he was there for me. I had memorised Zephaniah 1.14, “The great day of the Lord is near – near and coming quickly.” That made me feel that things were going to get better, and they did.
‘I started going to a church in London Bridge where they had showers, a food bank, and a coffee morning. It was a warm space and things got better.
‘It was many years before I came back to God. But I got off the streets and off the drugs. I’ve been sober for four years and now I work in a food bank where I live. I haven’t looked back since.
‘I got baptised last year and it was an amazing day. The church loves me and I have a life now. God was always there for me, but it feels as if “the great day” is happening to me now. I know that, theologically, it means something else, but that’s how it is for me and it’s great. It’s amazing living in a “great day”. I know God is good and he gives me hope and comfort.’
