Faith guides
Something to read
Why will you sin against an innocent person by killing David without cause?
- 1 Samuel 19:5 from full reading 1 Samuel 19:1-7.
Something to think about
This story speaks volumes to our current realities of diminishing respect for other people, weakening defence of human rights, and our role as individuals and as communities in the care for the most vulnerable.
Our faith guides us on the right path to live our lives.
Jesus commands us, his followers, to love God and love your neighbour as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). Scripture exhorts us to live in peace with others (Hebrews 12:14), defend the weak (Romans 12:17-21, Isaiah 1:17) and act justly (Micah 6:8).
To this end, we draw on our values statement as a reference point for our thoughts and actions:
‘Our values are rooted in our Christian belief and are based on our understanding of relational theology, which asserts that human beings are called to have a special relationship with God and in turn to have a particular relationship with one another.’
Something to do
Reflect on a time when you:
- advocated on someone’s behalf and how that made you feel, and;
- could have backed someone but didn’t and how you felt, then;
- consider what you might do to be more like Jonathan and less like Saul.
Something to pray
Lord, help me to act justly,
love mercy and walk humbly,
in all my endeavours.
