Thy Kingdom Come Prayer Journal
Day 8 - Saves
Reflection
‘... He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness
that we had done, but according to His mercy, through the
water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.’
Titus 3:5 (NRSV)
‘It does exactly what it says on the tin’
is one of the most successful slogans in
UK advertising history – the statement is
now used way beyond preserving wood!
Colloquially it means, of course, that
the name of something is an accurate
description of its qualities.
What an amazing, beautiful name is
'Jesus'! Joseph was told that he must call
the baby 'Jesus', 'because He will save His
people from their sins.' (Matthew 1:21)
The name Jesus literally means ‘Saviour’
– and He does exactly what it says,
written not on the tin, but written on the
heart of God.
In the centuries before this Saviour was
born, there were so many indications
that Father God is one who saves
(e.g. 1 Chronicles 16:35; Psalm 40:13).
However, with the arrival, life, and death
of Jesus, our experience of the God who
saves us from sin and its consequences is
taken to a new level.
For sure, we cannot save ourselves! Paul
explained, 'He saved us, not because of
righteous things we had done, but because
of His mercy. He saved us through the
washing of rebirth and renewal by the
Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on
us generously through Jesus Christ our
Saviour.' (Titus 3:5) Our cooperation,
however, is vital. 'If we confess our
sins, He is faithful and just and will
forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness.' (1 John 1:9)
He is the God who saves us!
Pause and pray
Pause and pray for your five
people, that they will come
to know the saving love of
God.
