As we celebrate Thanksgiving with our American friends this Thursday, we are reminded that nothing we have is ours. Like a newborn infant in a mother’s arms, we are utterly dependent beings. We can take credit for nothing—life, breath, or strength. This realization punctures our pride and self-reliance, and that is why it is the root of true gratitude. All that we are, all that we have, all that we hope for: it all comes only as a gift from our Creator and Redeemer.
