Loved
Something to read
Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
- 1 Samuel 18:3 from full reading 1 Samuel 18:1-4 .
Something to think about
In as much as the second great command – love your neighbour as yourself – is concerned, Jonathan fulfilled it in his friendship with David. ‘Jonathan loved him (David) as his own soul’.
It is very unlikely that you’ll ever meet any of the people or communities that you support through Christian Aid. But can you imagine what it would look like for you or me to love someone on the other side of the world, with the same vigour as we love our own souls?
I think it might look like being a part of a global movement for change. Ours is such a movement. Here are some of Christian Aid’s aims:
- to expose poverty throughout the world
- to help in practical ways to end it
- to highlight, challenge and change the structures and systems that favour the rich and powerful over the poor and marginalised.
Could you be like Jonathan if Christian Aid is like David? In loving Christian Aid, you’re not giving your life over to an organisation, but you are committing to love the people whom Christian Aid champions.
Something to do
Commit to find a friend with whom you may covenant/partner with to give, act, and pray for the work of Christian Aid.
Something to pray
Our Father,
I love you because you have first loved me.
Strengthen my resolve to dearly love everyone
by the way that I serve them with my money,
my voice and my concern,
to the end that poverty may be diminished in this world,
Amen.
