Worship the Lord your God.

Something to read

I have sinned; yet honour me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.

- 1 Samuel 15:30 from full reading 1 Samuel 15:24-31 .

Something to think about

Can you see how once again Saul is being a good negative example to us? He is being presented as a perfect case for what not to do. In this instance, I think, he is an example of a less than honourable servant. ‘Honour me now before the elders of my people…and return with me.’

Saul is concerned that if Samuel does not go to the meeting with him he will lose face and influence among his people. Can this be the case with us? Do we worry about losing face or influence among our friends, family and networks?

Something of that pride can be at the heart of continuing hurdles to ending poverty.

Something to do

Read about the work that our partners are doing to facilitate good governance in civil society

Something to pray

Lord God, king over all,
grant that good government
would be exercised on earth as it is heaven,
and help us, by your Holy Spirit,
to be diligent in the use of our rights
to champion the cause
of people living in poverty.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
