Bible Society: Reasons To Believe In The Power Of The Bible

‘I was a Hindu by birth and born in Nepal. In the Hindu culture, there are a lot of rituals. You are trying to be close to God by your deeds. I became a Christian in 1982 by reading the Bible. I met some missionaries and had the privilege of learning from them. I read the Bible secretly, as if my family would know, they would not have been happy.

‘Making a long story short, God touched my life. I saw that this was my life. The Bible Society of Nepal had done a Bible in Nepalese and it was amazing to read it in my own language. I am so thankful.

‘The Bible convicted me and God gave me his peace. But it was a very difficult choice. At that time, if you converted, there was the penalty of going to prison. I knew that becoming a Christian would mean that I was going against my family and against the society, but there was no alternative. I saw that redemption was in Christ.

‘When I told them, my family were very upset. I had to leave and find my own way. There was a big opposition from family and friends. It was very painful to be separated from my family, but in the end there was a reconciliation.

‘The verse that helps me is 2 Corinthians 5.17 which says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!” This tells me that I don’t need to worry about the past. It gives me confidence, but also the challenge that I am living that new life daily.’
