Lines of protection

Something to read

Moses said to the Lord, ‘The people are not permitted to come up to Mount Sinai; for you yourself warned us, saying, “Set limits around the mountain and keep it holy.”’

- Exodus 19:23.

Something to think about

If I told you that I’ve enjoyed many evenings with friends gathered around an old washing machine drum, you might think me odd.

If I tell you that a washing machine drum makes an excellent firepit, I hope you might revise your opinion! Marshmallows on sticks, reminiscing with old stories, and a guitar around to help sing and pray together is a pretty ideal evening for me. But since having a toddler, those opportunities have been few and far between, for one critical reason: keeping a small child away from an inviting-looking fire is both very difficult, and very necessary.

Christians tend to think of God as close, intimate, and approachable. The best friend we can chat to, the loving parent who nurtures us, the strong shepherd who hoicks us up on his shoulders. It can be a shock then, when narratives like this account of Moses meeting God on Mount Sinai, remind us that the absolute holiness of God is powerful and dangerous.  Holiness is attractive and inviting, much like a fire on a cold evening, yet God’s presence was off-limits to the people for their own protection.

Something to do

As you go about your day today, look out for all the safety mechanisms you encounter, from painted lines on the road to protective screens. How might they help you reflect on the awesome holiness of God?

Something to pray

Holy God, thank you that your word reminds us of your perfect goodness and purity. Please fill me with wonder and joy at the way you welcome us to come close to you, through Jesus. Amen.
