Bible Society: Reasons To Believe In The Power Of The Bible
‘I went to Bible college 11 months after becoming a Christian. That was ridiculous really, but I felt I had a calling. I felt so much peace and my whole attitude had changed. I had always been angry, but then everything had changed.
‘When I was at Bible college, I did a placement at HMP Guys Marsh and HMP The Verne. It was absolutely incredible, and I felt such peace about it. At that time, I read Matthew 25.31–46, in which Jesus says, “I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me.”
‘That stuck so strongly with me. I came out of prison with a sense that I wanted to be a prison chaplain. Everyone had reasons why I couldn’t do that. But I felt God was telling me that was what he wanted.
‘I’ve worked as a prison chaplain since 2014. I love the fact that the guys – not all of them – have reached a point where they want to change. You can really share God’s word with the guys. They don’t believe there’s hope, but God can offer it.
‘Those words in Matthew were a calling on my life. I love my job. It’s challenging, but it’s an absolute privilege. I can’t see myself doing anything else.’
