It is Thursday of Holy Week. As Jesus’ path nears the cross, we see ever more clearly his resolve to pour out mercy on the undeserving. He takes up the basin and the towel to wash his disciples’ feet, even though they will soon use those very feet to flee when he is arrested. He shares the bread and cup with them at Passover, even though he knows that one of the men reclining at the table will betray him with a kiss. He leads them in a hymn, even though he knows that one of them will later use the same singing lips to deny him three times.
Then, in Gethsemane, while his disciples drift to sleep, he prays to his Father with a heart full of anguish over the coming judgment he will taste: the full wrath of God against the rebellion of his people. Our sins, they are many—like the disciples, we have so often denied and dishonored our King—yet his mercy is more. “Yet not what I will, but what you will,” he prays (Mark 14:36). What riches of kindness: he chooses to go all the way to the cross for our sake.
As we continue to meditate on the final days of Jesus’ earthly ministry, ponder the depths of his love as you listen to “Gethsemane <https://gettymusic.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=aa4cd9a5b4688d5ec76f457cb&id=f4cb17436a&e=843a733a52> ,” a reflection on Christ’s agony in the garden.
