Bible Society: Reasons To Believe In The Power Of The Bible

Isaiah 40 is the most important passage to me. My father was dying of cancer. He had lost a lot of weight and looked like a young man again, the young man we saw in family photos.

‘The passage ends, “Even youths grow tired and weary and young men stumble and fall, but those hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

‘I used to read that to him. He couldn’t speak at the time. He had made a decision not to speak anymore because it was so exhausting. But when I read this to him, he would smile.

‘He was a real man of God – a good and kind man. He knew what I was getting at in this that there will be a resurrection. He believed he would be there. It was comforting to read that. I read it at his funeral too. It helped me as well, because I knew that I would see him again.

‘These verses from Isaiah gave hope, because they are all about Jesus. It talks about the glory and creativity of God and yet he notices when a sparrow falls. I like the sound of that God.

‘It helped me at the time because I realised that our human struggle is like a blink of an eye to God. If only we knew of the glory that God has got prepared for us. We can’t imagine how amazing that will be, and our parents and our grandparents are going to be there for eternity.

‘When you lose people you love it feels like the world has come to an end, but this says that you will see them again. That’s very exciting.’
