Letting go of questions

Something to read

And he said, "Go and say to this people: 'Keep listening, but do not comprehend; keep looking, but do not understand.'"

- Isaiah 6:9 from full reading Isaiah 6:1-8.

Something to think about

We seem to have an innate sense of wanting to understand everything. If we spend time with small children, we often get tired of their repeated questions as they seek to understand new things around them.

Isaiah’s call is a strange one: to dull the minds of the people so that they do not understand, to make them blind and deaf to what’s being said.

How often do we find ourselves asking the wrong questions and getting bogged down looking for answers that are beyond our reach and understanding?

Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, encourages his readers to ‘hold firmly to the message’. We sometimes have to let go of our questions and simply hold on tight to our belief and experience of God’s greatness and love - and trust in his goodness.

Something to do

Pray about a situation in the world where there are powers at work which you do not understand. Pray for the people affected and hurt, and pray for the world leaders involved.

Something to pray

When our lives hold more questions than answers, Lord, hold us in your love, embrace our uncertainty and strengthen our faith. Show a glimmer of your light to a world of darkness, lead us in your ways and help us to follow.
