Sanctuary Foundation Advent Devotional Day 2

Twenty-three days to Christmas feels to me like a long time I can’t begin to imagine what it would feel like to wait for hundreds of years. That’s how long the world was given to prepare for the first Christmas. The ancient prophet Isaiah announced:

‘In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”

The significance of this centuries-in-advance save-the-date announcement was the context in which it was given. The country was in terrible crisis. People were struggling to survive. Their suffering stemmed directly from the way they had treated the weak and vulnerable. Poverty and injustice were now everywhere and there seemed to be no way out. Who would help them become once more a place of sanctuary and security?

Isaiah’s Christmas announcement offered hope. God himself was on his way. He would transform everything and reconnect people to himself and each other.

This Christmas Isaiah’s challenge still stands. As we get ready for Christmas, let’s not forget to prepare the way for the Lord to restore sanctuary and security for those who need it most.
