“When you’re in detention, it’s like you’re serving a death sentence.”
Manono fled Malawi fearing that she would be forced to marry a man, or killed for being a lesbian. While seeking asylum here she has been locked up in immigration detention more than once.
The UK is the only country in Europe where people seeking safety can be detained indefinitely, with no idea when they might be set free. It is damaging for everyone, but LGBTQI+ people like Manono are especially at risk.
Many will have fled persecution and are trying to cope with trauma from their past. In detention, they are forced back into the closet to stay safe, and left to relive that trauma alone without specialist support.
“Detention centres are very bad places for an LGBTQ person. I did not tell anyone I was a lesbian.”
In 2016 the government recognised that trans and intersex people are at greater risk of harm in detention and should not be detained in most circumstances. But six years on we are still waiting for them to say the same for all LGBTQI+ people.
