The Injustice Advent Calendar Day 21
24 days to change the world
Day 21
Sign an open letter for deaf children
There are 50,000 deaf children in the UK, and every one of them can achieve the same things as their hearing friends with the right support.
Teachers of the Deaf play a huge role in this. They give advice to families, support deaf children in schools, and give training to schools on deaf awareness.
But since 2011, numbers of Teachers of the Deaf have dropped by 19%.
Shockingly, in England deaf students achieve on average a whole grade less at GCSEs than their hearing friends.
This is a huge inequality. Deaf children have a right to equal opportunities in education.
However, with fewer Teachers of the Deaf to support young people, families and teachers, this simply isn’t happening.
Parents of deaf children Shikha and Juliet have written an open letter to the government, demanding more Teachers of the Deaf, and other specialist education staff – so that every deaf child and young person can have the future they deserve.
Together, we can make those in power take notice and dismantle the barriers holding deaf young people back.
