The Injustice Advent Calendar Day 15
24 days to change the world
Day 15
Make my town pesticide-free
Pesticides aren’t just used in agriculture. A wide range of different pesticides (including insecticides, herbicides and fungicides) are used in our towns and cities. In fact, other than pesticide residues on food, one of the most common ways for the majority of people in the UK to be exposed to pesticides is through spending time in urban, public areas. Local councils are the main users, spraying pesticides in parks, playgrounds, cemeteries, on pavements and road verges and around council houses.
Pesticide exposure is linked to health problems such as asthma, cancer, birth defects and reproductive issues. Many projects forged by local residents to bring communities together in nature and to encourage wildlife are undermined by the continued spraying of chemicals by local authorities. We are in the midst of a biodiversity crisis and ending the use of these poisons in our urban spaces is the first step towards creating healthy towns and cities which are abundant with life.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Almost 100 towns and cities in the UK are already working to go pesticide-free and are proving that it can be done. Alternatives do exist, but is your council willing to take action?
Send a quick email to your councillors asking them to make your town pesticide-free:

Remember, standing against injustice can be complicated. Some actions might not relate to causes you believe in and others might not be possible for very practical reasons. You are welcome to skip today and come back again tomorrow!
