Sanctuary Foundation Advent Devotional Day 12
Christmas is the time of year we are most hospitable. We are more likely to invite our neighbours around, more likely to see our extended family, and more likely to invite friends to a church service. We are also more likely to give to charity or to lend a helping hand to those we know to be alone on Christmas day.
Perhaps we are inspired by the innkeeper who made room when there was no room. But the innkeeper, like some of our other nativity staples: the donkey, the blue dress and the infant’s halo, is not even mentioned in the Bible.
“Joseph went…to Bethlehem… with Mary. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born and she gave birth to her son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger.”
Who was it who helped them, pointed them in the right direction, opened a door for them? Who made room for a desperate young couple and unintentionally helped to welcome the Son of God into the world?
Sometimes like the innkeeper who wasn’t in the Christmas story, our help will be anonymous and invisible. And sometimes it will make more of a difference than we could ever imagine.
