Sanctuary Foundation Advent Devotional Day 10
The UK is in the middle of a chronic housing shortage meaning many people are living in inadequate housing or temporary accommodation. Many more are sleeping on the streets or sofa-surfing.
The story of one rough sleeper is tucked into the Christmas message. But it doesn’t focus in on his years of survival in the wilderness, or his months of imprisonment or his most humiliating of deaths. It starts with the person God defined him to be from the moment he was born.
John the Baptist would be a joy-bringer to parents who had long lost hope that they would ever have children. He would be a trailblazer, leading the way for Jesus’ ministry. He would be a teacher, showing others
“the tender mercy of our God by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death.”
Today we can still learn about God’s tender mercy by opening our doors to those who have no door to open back, because God still has a habit of choosing the most unlikely of people to be his trailblazers, his teachers and his joy-bringers.
