Lifewords Prayer March 4 - 10

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim that the captives will be released,

that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free,

and that the time of the Lord’s favour has come."

Luke 4:18-19

When Jesus stands up in the synagogue in Nazareth to begin his public ministry, the writer of Luke’s Gospel records that he picks up the scroll and reads these words from Isaiah. His message of good news is first good news to the poor, to the oppressed, to the captive and the blind. And these are not just words. Jesus becomes notorious for spending his time with tax collectors, prostitutes and sinners. Time and again he demonstrates compassion for the crowds of ordinary people who follow him around the Judean countryside, healing the sick, and reserving his harshest words for the powerful the political and religious elites. Just as the law continually called Israel to care for the poor and for the stranger, so Jesus expects those who follow his way to give themselves for "the least of these".

We all need good news, we are all in need of salvation. But in a world where 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty, where an estimated 140 million children are orphans, and where 1 in 3 women experience sexual or physical violence in their lifetime Jesus’ words challenge us that there is "good news work" still to be done. The Bible’s life words are good news first for the poor and the oppressed holding out the hope of spiritual, physical, and emotional liberation. How will we serve as witnesses to this good news in our world, and with our whole lives?

Consider the Wildflowers

It’s estimated that there are around 40-42 million women in prostitution worldwide. In 2016 we teamed up with Azalea a Luton-based charity that works with women caught in sexual exploitation and produced Consider the Wildflowers, a resource specially designed for vulnerable women.

* Consider the Wildflowers was written with women from Azalea, bringing together their stories with the Bible’s life words. It has been used by specialist organisations and churches who have specific ministries with women in sexual exploitation. Give thanks for this work, and for the opportunity to share good news in a specific and contextualised way. Pray that this booklet will prove transformative in women’s lives.

* We now want to help even more women around the world by making 10,000 copies of the same resource available in Bulgarian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish. Following the impact of the English version, partner organisations have been in touch to explain the urgency for the resource in these languages too. We are ready to begin translation and production. Please pray for God’s provision to make this possible, so that this news of unconditional love and grace can be taken to the places of highest need.

* Thursday 8th March marks International Women’s Day and celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world. Yet globally, women are still disproportionately affected by poverty, oppression, violence, and trafficking. Let’s pray together for the work and witness of the church in communities worldwide; that the Bible would be used to bring justice and liberation to women’s lives.
