Lifewords Prayer January 13 - 19

God’s healing for girls in Kenya

According to UNICEF there are at least 200 million girls and women alive today who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM).

* FGM, also known as female genital cutting (FGC), is mostly performed on girls aged 12 to 18. However, reports from the World Health Organisation (WHO) show that they can sometimes be as young as five. Many communities believe this is necessary for womanhood and marriage, in order to keep them "clean", preserve their beauty, and add to their value. Very often countless girls encounter serious health complications and experience emotional trauma. Please pray for girls in countries where FGM takes place. Pray that those who have already experienced this will receive medical support and that more informed cultural choices might be made in the future.

* Kenya is one of several countries where FGM is still performed today. Although the Kenyan government made the practice illegal in 2011, West Pokot is among the regions where it is still active. Girls here are often subject to social pressures and risk being stigmatised if they don’t undergo FGM. Please pray for groups and initiatives advocating the rights and protection of women and girls around the world. Pray too for the provision of education to help increase awareness surrounding the risks and damage caused by FGM.

* Lifewords Kenya is now working with several schools and churches in the region helping change attitudes through Choose Life. "The teachers and church members using the curriculum say it’s like a mentor," says Clara, says Clara, Programme Director for Lifewords Kenya. "Especially for the girls caught up in dilemmas with FGM. Many of them no longer think it is something to be proud of and are making more informed choices concerning the rites of passage options in their culture." Give thanks for new opportunities to introduce people to Choose Life. Pray that their trauma is transformed through God’s hope and healing.
