THE Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland is to address a conference for Easter Passion play organisers which is coming to Edinburgh for the first time in October.

The 2019 Passion Trust Conference will take place in St Paul’s and St George’s Church in Edinburgh on October 12 after an optional event on Friday evening in St Columba’s by the Castle. The conference is being hosted by the Princes Street East Play Trust, which has been staging Passion plays in Edinburgh city centre since 2005.

The events involves directors, producers, actors, fundraisers, technicians and volunteers from all over the UK who come together to talk about Passion Plays, said the Rev Mike Frew, a retired minister, who chairs the Princes Street East Play Trust.

He explained: "Christian drama is a great way of presenting the story of Jesus in an engaging way, which invites people to consider the Gospel. We at the Princes Street Easter Play are excited by this opportunity to encourage existing Passion plays in Scotland and beyond; we also hope to inspire people to try new ones."

Delegates will benefit from the experience of those who have staged plays for many years and there will also be information on free support and resources from the Trust’s work with over 50 plays in the last few years, along with information about grants and funding available from the Passion Trust.

Speakers at the conference include the Moderator, the Rt Rev Colin Sinclair, Professor Helen Bond and Professor Jolyon Mitchell (both from the University of Edinburgh) and Kamala Santos, a scriptwriter. Workshops will take place on subjects including scriptwriting, fight scenes and marketing and social media. Registration for the conference is via the Passion Trust's website https://passiontrust.org
