Compassion UK: Beware Negativity

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

Romans 12:12 ESV

It’s easy to confuse being discerning with being negative. As a twenty-something Christian setting out in music ministry, I was extremely ambitious and filled with faith. I wish I had a dollar for every wise and learned Christian who tried to talk me out of my mission! I’m not afraid to admit I’ve found myself doing the same thing to others at times. My intentions have been to impart wisdom, but the outcome has been a little negative at times.

Please don’t try to convince someone their glass is half empty. In this troubled world we need more optimists. Let other people count their blessings and embark upon their impossible dreams!

Reflection
Has someone cast negativity over something you’re attempting? Or have you found yourself discouraging someone else in their rose-tinted view of the world? It’s a common human error. But over Lent let’s take a moment to lay down all things negative and exchange them for faith-filled prayer.

Lord, help me to know the difference between discernment and negativity. Help me to remain optimistic and filled with faith, even when things don’t work out as I first imagine or hope. Help me to share that faith and optimism with others always. In Jesus’ name, amen.
