Compassion UK: Capture Beauty

He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers.

Exodus 35:35

The world God created is beautiful. In England, my husband and I live quite close to the Peak District, and although we pass it almost weekly, its beauty always takes my breath away. All year round—come rain, sun, or snow—it reflects the exciting creativity of God, inspiring me to create in response.

Responding to nature with creativity is both healthy and inspiring. That’s why I began writing songs in the first place. In a song you can catch something pretty in the net of time, like a little truth butterfly, which would otherwise quickly slip through your mind like sand through fingers. Using creativity as a means of expressing ourselves and capturing beauty is something we can all do.

If you have a pen and paper or if you have a camera on your phone, you can capture something. Why not try over Lent? One of the traits that identifies us as children of God is our creativity. So let’s create!

Lord, thank you for the gift of creativity. It’s who you are, and you’ve placed that instinct within me too. Today please awaken this in me afresh so I can take joy in creative things. If I am not an artist, then help me to apply creativity in my work, my relationships, and even my recreation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
