Compassion UK: Failure Isn’t Final

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5–6

When something we’ve done or attempted has been what we see as a failure, it’s very easy to remain in the shadow of that failure. But failure yesterday does not make you a failure today. As God’s mercies are new every day you have permission to leave that failure behind and move on to success in your efforts today. When Thomas Edison’s experiments failed he didn’t take the pieces with him every day. He tossed them aside and tried again. Holding onto the weight of failed experiments is exhausting and unnecessary. You may as well be trying to bottle moonbeams! Let yesterday’s failures—and successes—die along with yesterday. Make room for today to be today.

Reflection
As this month draws to a close, let’s take a moment to bury the pieces of our failed experiments. As we begin a new chapter tomorrow, let’s begin as new creations, cushioned by God’s new mercies.

Lord, today I am laying down everything before you that hasn’t worked. I lay all my mistakes and shortcomings at the foot of the cross and thank you that I don’t have to carry them. I thank you that tomorrow is a new day and we can begin again. In Jesus’ name, amen.
