Compassion UK: Don’t Compare Fires

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you.”

Isaiah 43:2 NASB

When life gets hard, it’s too easy to feel that you’re the only one going through such a thing. It’s tempting to presume that your neighbour is coping far better than you are. But the truth is, regardless of the details, every one of us faces all manner of daily challenges. Don’t make the mistake of comparing your woes to someone else’s. Just as your gifts and calling are completely unique, so too is your journey through darkness. You’re doing the best that you can, and that’s all that matters. Never forget that God is with you in the fire.

In the last few days of Lent, let’s simply thank God that he sustains us in these difficult times.

Lord, thank you that you are my ever-present help in times of trouble. I know you love me and you’re not causing me this pain. Help me to be patient and compassionate when other people are hurting. Though they may appear to be coping very well, I have no idea what things are really like for them. Help me not to compare woes or my coping threshold to anyone else’s. In Jesus’ name, amen.
