Tearfund: Living Water Day 18
LIVING WATER: Rooted in Christ
They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. (Jeremiah 17:8)
Those who live on the West Coast will know that rain is not something we lack! Many of us in certain parts of the country will never leave the house without an umbrella. But for Lyson, and many like him in Malawi, the rains have become an infrequent occurrence, leaving their harvests unpredictable and unfruitful.
A plant's roots need to draw on the water and minerals in the soil in order to grow. If there is a drought and the earth is arid, the plant quickly dies.
Ephesians 3 talks about letting 'your roots grow down into the soil of God's marvellous love' (vs. 16-19 TLB). In the same way, we must allow our spiritual roots to draw on the Lord in order to bear fruit.
Lord, we know that apart from you, we can do nothing. Allow our roots to be firmly established in you – the source of all life.
