Scottish Fair Trade Forum MAY 2017

2017 Fair Trade Nation Lecture

This year for our Fair Trade Nation Lecture, the Forum welcomed Professor Bob Doherty, from the University of York. The lecture took place at the City of Glasgow College and was well attended by Fair Trade campaigners.

Bob provided an informative and engaging talk which outlined the challenges of the global food system and explained the important role which Fair Trade can play in helping to shape a more resilient food system in the future. Following Bob's talk the audience took part in a question and answer session.

If you didn't manage to make it along to the event but would like to know more about the role that Fair Trade can play in this issue then take a look at Bob's slides here. <http://scottishfairtradeforum.us1.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=8e244cea8abeb68734b6b4d00&id=0b7eb8f992&e=e0dcc527ce>

World Fair Trade Tartan

A special tartan has been designed to celebrate Scotland’s Fair Trade Nation status. The tartan was presented to WFTO President Rudi Dalvai and Minister for International Development, Alasdair Allan on World Fair Trade Day, 13 May 2017, in Edinburgh.

Tania Pramschufer, director of Hand Up Events, worked in collaboration with textile designers House of Edgar to design the tartan, which incorporates the vibrant green and blue colours associated with the Fair Trade cause.

The World Fair Trade tartan, designed to commemorate Scotland’s status as a Fair Trade nation, will also help to support Fair Trade crafts makers and designers around the globe, thanks to a partnership facilitated by Eve Broadis of WFTO-member business, Fair Trade Scotland. Official World Fair Trade tartan products will be made and designed at Villageworks in Cambodia.

JTS / Malawi Farmers Appeal

Just Trading Scotland <http://scottishfairtradeforum.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8e244cea8abeb68734b6b4d00&id=ec3611c60d&e=e0dcc527ce> (JTS) works very closely with smallholder farmers and producers in Africa and Asia. They have built up very close working relations in particular with rice farmers in northern Malawi, who have seen their businesses and farmers associations make huge strides in the last eight years and are leading technical and social development in their country.

Like many Fair Trade businesses in the current economic climate, JTS urgently needs more working capital to enable them to continue providing farmers with markets at prices which can enable them to build their businesses, send their children to school and college, and strengthen their communities and associations.

JTS are seeking £50,000 before the end of June to pay for two containers of fairly traded rice and keep the flow to schools, churches and shops and ensure farmers get fairly paid for their crops.

A donation, large or small, will secure the future of trade for the many smallholder farmers and their families in Malawi.
