Changes in the use of certification and accreditation of Fair Trade

There has been some significant media coverage in recent weeks of changes being introduced by some key brands to how they promote their commitment to Fair Trade and sustainability. This has most notably been in relation to Cadbury's Dairy Milk products and Sainsbury's own brand red and gold label tea.

If you are unsure about what these changes mean for Fair Trade certification then take a look at the statement published on our website. <http://scottishfairtradeforum.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8e244cea8abeb68734b6b4d00&id=5603b20036&e=e0dcc527ce>

Ask your MP and MSP's to sign the Sainsbury's Parliamentary Motions

Following the announcement that Sainsbury's have decided to end the Fairtrade Mark certification of its Red Label and Gold Label tea in favour of their new Sainsbury's Foundation approach, Caroline Lucas MP has tabled a motion <http://scottishfairtradeforum.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8e244cea8abeb68734b6b4d00&id=7e90c4a3d3&e=e0dcc527ce> in the UK Parliament and Colin Smyth MSP has lodged a motion <http://scottishfairtradeforum.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8e244cea8abeb68734b6b4d00&id=56f486d842&e=e0dcc527ce> in the Scottish Parliament. Both motions urge Sainsbury's and other supermarkets to strengthen their commitment to Fairtrade.

As a Fair Trade supporter, we are asking you to ask your MP to sign the Early Day Motion, lodged by Caroline Lucas MP in Westminster and to ask your MSPs to sign the motion, lodged by Colin Smyth MSP, in the Scottish Parliament.

Brexit Trade Campaign Success!

The UK government announced on 24th June that goods from around 48 of the world's poorest countries will continue to be sold in the UK without import taxes when we leave the EU. This announcement was made following hundreds of letters from campaigners to their MPs and a petition with more than 38,000 signatories to Liam Fox MP, The Secretary of State for International Trade, calling to make trade fair following Brexit.

This is brilliant news for farmers, employees and businesses in countries which rely on exports to the UK. More information on this is available on the Fairtrade Foundation website <http://scottishfairtradeforum.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8e244cea8abeb68734b6b4d00&id=7df6e7daa9&e=e0dcc527ce> , the Traidcraft website <http://scottishfairtradeforum.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8e244cea8abeb68734b6b4d00&id=5c32bae3d4&e=e0dcc527ce> and the UK government website. <http://scottishfairtradeforum.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8e244cea8abeb68734b6b4d00&id=e6ac40c932&e=e0dcc527ce>

Production of the World Fair Trade Tartan has begun in Cambodia

The production of World Fair Trade Tartan in Cambodia has begun. Eve Broadis of Fair Trade Scotland Limited visited the workshop site, Villageworks Songkhem, the guaranteed Fair Trade Organisation which manufactures the tartan.

The World Fair Trade tartan was created to celebrate Scotland's Fair Trade Nation status and was presented to WFTO President, Rudi Dalvai, and the Scottish Minister for International Development and Europe, Dr Alasdair Allan, on World Fair Trade Day 2017.

The idea of the tartan came about from Tania Pramschufer of Hand Up Events, an ethical events company. The tartan has been registered with the Keeper of the Scottish Tartans Register.
