World Fair Trade Day

A special tartan has been designed to celebrate Scotland’s Fair Trade Nation status and will be presented to WFTO President Rudi Dalvai and Minister for International Development, Alasdair Allan for World Fair Trade Day, 13 May 2017, Edinburgh.

Tania Pramschufer, director of Hand Up Events, worked in collaboration with textile designers House of Edgar to design the tartan, which incorporates the vibrant green and blue colours associated with the Fair Trade cause.

The World Fair Trade tartan, designed to commemorate Scotland’s status as a Fair Trade nation, will also help to support Fair Trade crafts makers and designers around the globe, thanks to a partnership facilitated by Eve Broadis of WFTO-member business, Fair Trade Scotland. Official World Fair Trade tartan products will be made and designed at Villageworks in Cambodia, with proceeds from the line of bags and accessories shared between Villageworks and Fair Trade Scotland.

Eve Broadis added: "We are so proud to be launching a range of World Fair Trade Tartan accessories from our Cambodian partner, Villageworks. As WFTO members, both organisations encompass the 10 WFTO Fair Trade Principles into their daily working practice, and the consumer can be confident that their purchase contributes to sustainable livelihoods for the artisans and their families."

Martin Rhodes, Director of the Scottish Fair Trade Forum welcomed the initiative: "This is a great example of partnership between business here in Scotland and Fair Trade producers."

Attendees of the Fair Trade Fiesta and FashionABLE events this weekend (Friday 12 and Saturday 13 May) will be able to see the first kilts made from the WFTO tartan, worn by WFTO President Rudi Dalvai and model Jack Eyers.
