Daily Reading: 8 November

(from www.christianaid.org.uk)

We can make God’s presence felt.

Something to read

Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose hope is in the Lord their God,
who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them;
who keeps faith for ever;
    who executes justice for the oppressed;
    who gives food to the hungry

Psalm 146: 5-7 from full reading Psalm 146

Something to think about

The psalmist advises against putting ‘trust in princes’ and urges the listener, and thus all of us, to rely on the God of Jacob who created our world. The God who continues to be actively part of our world. The God who is with us and within us. The God who feels compassion towards all, particularly those who are oppressed.

Today’s psalm is a call to each one of us to strive for justice. Each one of us, can recognise, acknowledge and declare that we need to work towards creating a world where there is enough food for all.

Christian Aid works with those who experience drought all over the world. Drought means severe disruption to livelihoods and destroyed crops and food sources. So, let us work with farmers to provide materials and methods which improve irrigation. And in so doing, we can make God’s presence felt and known in our world today and every day.

Something to do

Enifa and Fatima live in Malawi, and have experienced severe food shortages. Help support these women and their families.

Something to pray

Compassionate God, who is with us in hungering for justice.

We pray for all who experience hunger:

those who experience drought,

those who depend on humanitarian aid,

those who rely on food banks.

Enable us to create a world without hunger.

In Jesus’ name we pray.

Amen.
