Who is my neighbour?

Something to read

“Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Something to think about

The story of the Good Samaritan is well known. It is not hard to work out who the neighbour is. However, why is it left to the Samaritan to ‘do the right thing’ and ensure that the man is looked after?

The man has left Jerusalem and is on his way home. The way the story is told suggests that both parties leave Jerusalem. They may have suspected that the man was a lure, so that unsuspecting travellers might be attacked.

As a people group, the Samaritans were disliked by the Jews. We do not know if the attacked man was a Jew or a Gentile, but this made no difference to the Samaritan. All he saw was a fellow human in need and reached out with compassion, going above and beyond to ensure the recovery of his fellow human.

The difference between the first two travellers and the third is that while the first two have an intricate knowledge of the law, they did not appear to transfer this knowledge into their lives. Whereas the Samaritan incorporated the law into his lifestyle. He understood that where a fellow person was in need, he was to act selflessly and generously.

Something to do

Volunteer with groups in your home town that work to better the lives of others. Show compassion on those who might be struggling, and listen to their stories.

Something to pray

Heavenly God, thank you for the organisations where I live that reach out to assist others and provide aid and relief. Please help me to reach out in a similar manner to those around me who may be struggling.
