Be Still and Know - 'God Chose Things The World Considers Foolish'

(from www.premierchristianradio.com)

Welcome to our daily devotional. We hope you will be blessed by Dr Micha Jazz's inspiring thoughts every Monday - Friday.

"Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful."

1 Corinthians 1:27 NLT

I sometimes wonder what I am doing, sitting here in the Oratory praying and contemplating. It’s such a change to my former approach to life. I assumed, emerging from university, that I’d demonstrated I was wise, relying upon that degree.

So here I am, an Oxford graduate. I assumed, for what reason I don’t know, that I had some significant contribution to make to the world. My assumption was related to my certificated wisdom and my ambition. Yet work as I did to climb the slippery pole of Christian advancement, inner satisfaction eluded me. I lived off my wits and was dependent, as we all are, upon the patronage of others in positions to advance me. The more they did, the greater the mythology surrounding my ability grew. It became something of a burden.

Then the collapse came as Katey needed my support. I felt devastated by her illness as much as by my own loss of the “career” I enjoyed. I’m not sure Jesus intended “Come, follow me” as “Come, forge your career”, although I’m no Greek expert. As I stepped back, the pain was both in the caring and in the loss of my role and my workplace responsibilities. I felt worthless and directionless. As Katey physically declined, I emotionally collapsed, and discerning the difference between tears of self-pity and tears of sorrow was a difficult call to make.

It’s only with the benefit of hindsight, and with separation between what I was once known for and who I am today, that I recognise that my greatest gift was to have a woman who loved me and whom I loved, and that I was able to walk alongside her practically and prayerfully. This was a true demonstration of both wisdom and strength. I cannot believe how much my perspectives have altered, and for the better.

QUESTION

Consider your own ambitions. Do you feel as if they have been thwarted by circumstances in life?

Lord, I give to you all my ambitions, hopes and dreams. I trust in your guiding hand.
