"Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God"

1 Corinthians 1:24 NLT

I remember the self-consciousness of being called to stand and recite my times tables in front of the whole class at school. It was humiliating and no matter how hard I practised I could never commit these to memory. I looked and, more importantly, felt stupid.

The message of the cross is foolishness to those presuming they are wise. Indeed, the bastions of intellectual prowess seem to take pleasure in demonstrating how easily they have dethroned and exiled God from the affairs of this world. I, of course, have attempted to scale such intellectual heights, achieving my doctorate in Syriac from a prestigious British university classed as among the top one per cent globally. Offered postdoctoral work, I turned it down knowing that I was more than my brain, and exercising its capacity was merely a diversion among more important aspects of life.

Self-confidence drains away in the face of life’s challenges, at whatever age, and we realise that the norms that have been imposed upon us are in fact no less of a mirage than the myth that everyone is able to pursue their dream. Ask any girl trafficked by people smugglers.

It is perhaps why God himself had to fall into the gutter, squeezing himself into the body of a human in the shape of Jesus. No more the benefits of Trinitarian life in the boundless heavens. Now it was the harsh reality of a workman’s cottage in the sink region of Palestine. No useful universities here. God appreciates our lowest ebb, because that’s the space in which he chose to embody Jesus. God’s Son, constrained by humanity, yet always in touch with his divinity, discovered the rhythm of life that falls to the lot of most of us.

True power is when we are able to let go of its enticements and benefits and true wisdom, recognising we can never discover who we really are and what or who we were created to be while in pursuit of such power.

QUESTION

Do you value too highly worldly qualifications or prize too lowly the knowledge of God?

Lord, may you and you alone be the treasure my heart seeks.
