"Unfailing love and truth have met together. Righteousness and peace have kissed!"

Psalm 85:10 NLT

It takes humility to pray. It’s difficult to imagine that by making space and time with God somehow I shall influence a world that seems overwhelmed with problems at both a global and personal level. Yet, this is the invitation from God, to pray. Indeed, Paul reminds us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, NKJV).

My own battles with prayer began with Katey’s diagnosis with MS. We faced something we didn’t understand and it frightened us. I lived by faith as an evangelist, while anxiously working out where to get income if God’s resource failed me. I lived caught between a Protestant work ethic and the gracious provision of God. Yet, every time we received a bill and prayerfully brought that to God, uttered more in desperation than confidence, God came through with the necessary finance.

The MS diagnosis knocked the stuffing out of us. Plans for the future began to disintegrate as our pleas for physical healing came to nothing. Frustration and anger became my litany, and God remained exceptionally patient but remarkably silent, apparently caught up with other more pressing concerns. Placing our confidence in the steadfastness of God birthed steadfastness in us to love and support each other as well as build a pathway through the MS. Life was draining from Katey so I decided to leave work. I had vowed before God to care for her in sickness as much as in health.

Something godly grew within and between us. We wheeled across the road to a local park, flask and chocolate treats in hand, and simply considered the mystery who is God, and this contemplation was a comprehensive prayer. All prayer required was a faithfulness which expressed itself through resting in the provision of God, albeit a provision that was not of our creation or pleading.

QUESTION

To what degree are you willing to let go of the rudder of your life and entrust the voyage into God’s hands?

Lord, guide me and lead me, and I place my life again today into your hands.
